Choose Your Own Adventure: attempt a home addition or Move?

Home is more than a house. It’s the spot that holds the life celebrations and prompts the sweet
memories. So what do you do when that home is feeling more like a house? A house that
maybe is a little too cramped or dated?

First you look around and think “man, I could use some more space.” And then you look at that
house for sale two streets over and think “well, maybe its time to look for a new house?”

If your house is really your home then right about now the the feelings kick in and you say “I love
this house and I want to stay.”

If you read the above and thought: “No way, no how, it’s a house!”

Then there is your answer, DO NOT REMODEL. Instead do some thinking and decide if your
next move is buying or building. You need to love a house to remodel it or begin a home addition for yourself. So taking
that time to be honest about your attachment to the house can save you time and energy in the
future.

If you read the above and tears welled up in your eyes as the memories flooded in…

Welcome to the World of Remodeling and Home Additions!

Now wait a minute! Put the crowbar down and resist the urge to knock down that wall! Before
you dive into paint chips and custom cabinets, here’s a few things to consider:

● Make a list of your “must haves” and prioritize them
● Consider your location and local laws
● Consider your time and resources (including budget)

Once you have brainstormed, reality check your ideas with your family, friends and neighbors*.
Remodeling is a big decision. Enthusiasm is abundant in the beginning and new ideas flow
freely, but a little planning goes a long way to making your home a success.

A positive remodel starts with the right mindset and an excellent partnership in remaking your
home.

*If you already dislike your neighbors, check to see if they are moving. If not, consider a nice
fence or calling a realtor to help find a house that will have a better neighbor situation. Neighbors
can be a major dealbreaker in remodeling and additions.
